commonweal 的詞源

公元1300年左右，“belonging to all, owned or used jointly, general, of a public nature or character”一詞源自古法語 comun “common, general, free, open, public”（9世紀，現代法語 commun），源自拉丁語 communis “in common, public, shared by all or many; general, not specific; familiar, not pretentious.” 這是從重建的原始印歐語 *ko-moin-i- “held in common”中得出的，這是一個由 *ko- “together”和 *mei-（1）的詞根的後綴形式 *moi-n-, 組成的複合形容詞，因此字面意思是“shared by all”。

「健康或繁榮的狀態」，中古英語的 wele，源自古英語的 wela，意指「財富、世俗的財 riches、黃金」（如今已不再使用），在晚期古英語中也有「福利、幸福；繁榮、好運」的意思。根據 Watkins 的說法，這可以追溯到西日耳曼語的 *welon-，而這又源自原始印歐語詞根 *wel- (2)，意為「願望、意志」（參見 will (v.)；這個詞也與 well (adv.) 有關）。

到了15世紀中期，這個詞的意義擴展到了「社區的福利、公共利益」，因此也引申為「一個狀態、一個社群」（1510年代；在 commonweal 中可見於14世紀中期的建議）。因此，莎士比亞在《科里奧蘭納斯》中使用了 weals-man，意指「國家領袖」。

自古英語以來，它就與 woe 形成了押韻搭配，常常表示「所有情況」。創世紀中禁果的描述有時被稱為「a fruit ðe kenned wel and wo」（13世紀中期）。
