cottager 的詞源

14世紀末，指農民的簡陋住所，來自古法語 cote "小屋，村舍" + 盎格魯-法語後綴 -age（根據 OED，整個詞可能表示“附屬於小屋的整個財產”）。古法語 cot 可能來自古諾爾斯語 kot "小屋"，與古英語 cot, cote "小屋，村舍"同源，源自原始日耳曼語 *kutan（源頭還包括中古荷蘭語 cot，荷蘭語 kot）。

意思是“小鄉村住宅或獨立的郊區房屋”（沒有貧困或租住的暗示）始見於1765年。現代法語 cottage 是19世紀從英語中重新借用的。Cottage industry，指可以在家完成的工作 ,，始見於1854年。Cottage cheese，美國一種軟質白色奶酪的名稱 ,，始見於1831年，最早指費城：

英語代詞後綴，對應拉丁語 -or。在本土詞中，它代表古英語 -ere（北安布里亞語也有 -are）“與之有關的人”，源自原始日耳曼語 *-ari（同源詞：德語 -er，瑞典語 -are，丹麥語 -ere），源自原始日耳曼語 *-arjoz。有些人認爲這個詞根與拉丁語 -arius 相同，可能是借用自拉丁語（參見 -ary）。
