dyke 的詞源

也作 bulldyke， bull-dike，意为“具有男性倾向的女同性恋者”，1926年；更早的 bulldyker, bulldycker 被用来指代同样的意思，1906年时被称为费城俚语。

根据《美国俚语词典》，1896年的一个来源将 dyke 列为“阴部”的俚语，而 Farmer 和 Henley 的《俚语及其类比》（1893年）中则有“hedge on the dyke”意指“女性阴毛”。 

[T]he word appears first in the long forms, bulldiker and bulldyking, both used in the 1920s by American blacks. No African antecedents have been found for the term, however, which leads to the possibility that this is basically just another backcountry, barnyard word, perhaps a combination of BULL and DICK. 还有变体 bulldagger（1932年），OED 认为这是词头，尽管拼写 bulldyker 的证据更早。

在古英語中，拉丁詞的對應詞有 wæpenwifestre（意為「武器女丈夫」）、scritta（意為「書寫者」）、bæddel（意為「床伴」）。後來，Will-Jill（1670年代）這個詞被用來形容雙性人或女性化的男性。在中世紀英語中，這個詞還被比喻性地用來指「不當同時擔任兩個職位的人」。作為描述這種身體狀況的名詞，中世紀英語中出現了 hermofrodito（14世紀末）和 hermofrodisia（15世紀初）。作為形容詞，這個詞大約在1600年左右開始使用。此外，它也用來形容那些具有雙重特性的事物，例如 hermaphrodite brig，指的是前方為方形桅杆、後方為雙桅帆船的船隻。

1839年，口語中對 morpho- 的變形，基於 hermaphrodite。更早的變形是 mophrodite（1706）； 還請參見 dyke。
