glass 的詞源

古英語 glæs “玻璃； 玻璃器皿”，源自原始日耳曼語 *glasam “玻璃”（源頭還包括古撒克遜語 glas，中古荷蘭語和荷蘭語 glas，德語 Glas，古諾爾斯語 gler “玻璃，鏡子”，丹麥語 glar），源自 PIE 詞根 *ghel-（2）“發光”，具有表示明亮顏色或材料的派生詞。該 PIE 詞根也是灰色、藍色、綠色和黃色的廣泛詞彙的祖先，例如古英語 glær “琥珀”，拉丁語 glaesum “琥珀”（可能來自日耳曼語），古愛爾蘭語 glass “綠色，藍色，灰色”，威爾士語 glas “藍色”。

Glass-house 自14世紀後期開始用作“玻璃工廠”，1838年開始用作“溫室”。
