manganese 的詞源

十七世紀時，這種黑色礦物，即錳的氧化物（古代在玻璃製造中用於去除着色物質），被稱爲法文中的 manganèse（16世紀），來自意大利語的 manganese，改編自中世紀拉丁文的 magnesia（詳見 magnesia）。從1783年開始，被用作金屬元素的名稱。

From the middle of the eighteenth century the combinations of manganese were studied by various chemists, and finally, in 1774, the metal manganese was isolated by Gahn, but for years there was much confusion in regard to its specific name, and it was not until after the beginning of the present century that the name manganese (mangan in German) began to be generally adopted.
