national 的詞源

約公元1300年，nacioun，「一群人，具有共同祖先和語言的大群體」，來自古法語nacion「出生，地位；後裔，親戚；國家，故鄉」（12世紀）並直接來自拉丁語nationem（主格natio）「出生，起源；品種，族群，類別，種族；部落」，字面意思是「已出生的事物」，來自natus，動詞nasci「出生」的過去分詞（古拉丁語gnasci），來自原始印歐語根*gene-「生育，繁殖」，其衍生詞指向生育及家庭和部落群體。

這個詞在英語中被廣泛使用，意為「一群人，同一民族的聚集體，講相同語言的人」，也有狹義的意義，「由政府和臣民或公民組成的政治社會，構成一個政治單位；居住在定義領土內的有組織的社區，該社區行使其主權。」
