popular 的詞源

約公元1300年，peple，「人類，普遍的人，男女」，來自盎格魯法語peple，people，古法語pople，peupel「人們，人口，人群；人類，世人」，源自拉丁語populus「一個民族，國家；公民團體；眾多，人群，群眾」，這個詞的起源未知。根據意大利語同源詞和衍生詞，如populari「摧毀，掠奪，洗劫」，Populonia，女神朱諾的姓氏，字面意思是「她保護免受破壞」，原始意大利語詞根據說意味著「軍隊」[de Vaan]。也提出了伊特魯里亞語起源。拉丁語詞也是西班牙語pueblo，意大利語popolo的來源。

在英語中，它取代了本土的folk，還有早期中世英語thede，來自古英語 þeod 「人，民族，國家」（來自PIE詞根*teuta-「部落」）。Thede在慣用表達in thede「在人民中」（約公元1400年有證據）和地名的首元素Thedford，Thetford等中持續存在。也比較中世英語thedish「本土的或屬於（特定）土地的」，來自古英語þeodisc。

「一些不特定的人」的意義來自約公元1300年。「構成社區的人的群體」的意義在14世紀中期（13世紀晚期在盎格魯法語中）；「平民，大眾」（與貴族區分）的意義來自13世紀晚期。「家族，部落或氏族成員」的意義來自14世紀晚期。

據其對手稱，該詞在1920年後被共產主義極權國家採用，以賦予其政府虛假的民粹主義感。這基於該詞的政治意義，「全體有選舉權公民的身體」（被視為政府權力的主權來源），約1640年代有證據。這也是法律短語The People vs.的意義，在美國某些法律下起訴的案件中使用（1801年）。
