repentance 的詞源

約於1300年， repenten，“爲過去的行爲感到懊悔並尋求寬恕； 對罪惡、犯罪或疏忽感到如此懊悔，以至於會改變生活方式”，源自於古法語 repentir（11世紀），來自於 re-，在此處可能被用作強調前綴，“非常”（參見 re-），加上俗拉丁語 *penitire “後悔”，來自於拉丁語 poenitire “使悲傷”，來自於 poena（參見 penal）。
