The stacked, closed sandwich form is described by 1896; bacon begins to join the ingredient c.1898 "In some of the most thoroughly up-to-date hotels" [New York Commercial Advertiser].

Other clubs also offered similar large sandwiches (an 1890 article in the Pittsburgh Press refers to a young reporter "demolishing a Press club sandwich").
