vigilante 的詞源

「警惕委員會成員」，1856年，美國英語，來自西班牙語vigilante，字面意思是「守望者」，源自拉丁語vigilantem（主格vigilans）「警惕的，焦慮的，小心的」，來自vigil「警惕的，醒著的」（參見vigil）。

1824年在密蘇里州的背景中也證實了Vigilant man的同樣意義。Vigilance committees在美國邊疆或其他官方權威不完善的地方，維持非正式的粗略秩序。早在1804年，在賓夕法尼亞州和其他州，警惕委員會就已經被證實，由當地政黨任命，負責在選舉日動員選民。
