pronombre del caso nominativo de tercera persona del plural, "personas o cosas en cuestión o mencionadas por última vez," c. 1200, de una fuente escandinava (antiguo nórdico þeir, antiguo danés þer, þair), originalmente un pronombre demostrativo plural masculino. Hacia c. 1400 había desplazado al inglés medio he, hei, del inglés antiguo hi, hie, plurales de he, heo "ella," hit "eso."

The most important importation of this kind [from Scandinavian to English] was that of the pronomial forms they, them and their, which entered readily into the system of English pronouns beginning with the same sound ( the, that, this) and were felt to be more distinct than the old native forms which they supplanted. Indeed these were liable to constant confusion with some forms of the singular number ( he, him, her) after the vowels has become obscured, so that he and hie, him and heom, her ( hire) and heora could no longer be kept easily apart. A partir de c. 1400 como "personas en general." El uso coloquial de they para "personas anónimas en autoridad" está atestiguado desde 1886. They say para "se dice" está en Milton.

Con referencia a sustantivos singulares en la década de 1520, especialmente con palabras en every, any, etc.

En inglés medio; desde el siglo XVII se ha considerado una abreviatura coloquial de them, pero originalmente era al menos en parte una forma de hem, el dativo y acusativo del pronombre de tercera persona del plural.
