「 anarchy 」の語源

1530年代、「政府の不在」の意味で、フランス語のanarchieまたは中世ラテン語のanarchia、ギリシャ語のanarkhia「指導者の不在、政府のない人々の状態」（アテネでは、紀元前404年の三十暴君の年に<約見> archonが存在しなかったことを指して使用された）から派生した抽象名詞で、anarkhos「支配者のいない」から、an-「なし」（an-（1）を参照）+ arkhos「指導者」（archonを参照）から。

1660年代からは「権威の混乱または不在」の意味で使用され、1849年には「力のない秩序」を提唱する社会理論に関連して使用され、直接的な政府の代わりに協会や協同組合が機能するという形で、1830年代にフランスの政治哲学者ピエール＝ジョゼフ・プルードン（1809-1865）によって定式化された。
