「 austerity 」の語源

14世紀中頃、「厳しさ、冷酷さ」の意味で、古フランス語のausterite「冷酷さ、厳しさ」（14世紀）から、また晩期ラテン語のausteritatem（主格austeritas）から直接的に、austerus「厳しい、 rigid」の意で、古典ラテン語では「冷酷な、酸っぱい」という比喩的な用法（austereを参照）から派生。

1580年代からは「厳格な自己規律、禁欲的な実践」の意味で使用されるようになり、そこから「厳格な単純さ、装飾や贅沢の不在」の意味に転じ、第二次世界大戦中には戦時経済として非必需品を制限する国家政策に適用された。
