「 eccentric 」の語源

15世紀初、「偏心円または軌道」、元々はプトレマイオスの天文学用語で、「地球が正確に中心にない円または軌道」を意味し、フランス語のeccentriqueおよび中世ラテン語のeccentricus（名詞および形容詞）から、ギリシャ語のekkentros「中心から外れた」（concentricに対して）から派生し、ek「外」（ex-を参照）+ kentron「中心」（center（名詞）を参照）から。1817年には「奇妙または風変わりな人」という意味が確認されている（S.W. Ryley、「The Itinerant, or Memoirs of an Actor」）。

1550年代にフランス語の eccentrique から、また中世ラテン語の eccentricus（名詞および形容詞）から直接借用された（詳しくは eccentric (n.) を参照）。人に対して使われる場合、「奇抜で風変わり」という比喩的な意味が初めて記録されたのは1620年代。この言葉については、「Eccentric は、普通の人々とは異なるだけでなく、主に説明がつかず、しばしば不規則な、趣味や偏見、判断などの影響を受けた行為に適用される」と [Century Dictionary] に記されている。
