「 friar 」の語源

「教会の施し修道会の一員」という意味で、13世紀後半に使われ始めた言葉で、frereは古フランス語のfrere（兄弟、修道士）に由来し、現代フランス語ではfrèreと表記されます。もともとはフランシスコ会、ドミニコ会、カルメル会、アウグスティヌス会といった施しを受けて生活する修道会を指しており、これらの修道士たちは13世紀初頭にイングランドに到着しました。ラテン語のfrater（兄弟）から派生しており、これはインド・ヨーロッパ語族の語根*bhrater-（兄弟）に由来します。また、一般的には「兄弟、友人、仲間」といった意味でも使われ、1300年頃から広く用いられました。

By the word [ friar] is meant a member of one of the mendicant orders, i.e. those living entirely on alms, especially the 'four orders' of Franciscans, Dominicans, Carmelites, & Augustinian Hermits. [ Monk] is used sometimes of all male members of religious orders including friars, but properly excludes the mendicants. In the latter case the general distinction is that while the monk belongs essentially to his particular monastery, & his object is to make a good man of himself, the friar's sphere of work is outside, & his object is to do a good work among the people. 「friar」という言葉は、施しを受けて生活する修道会の一員、特にフランシスコ会、ドミニコ会、カルメル会、アウグスティヌス会の「四つの修道会」のメンバーを指します。一方で、「Monk」は時には修道士を含むすべての男性修道会のメンバーを指すこともありますが、厳密には施し修道士を除外します。一般的な違いとしては、修道士は特定の修道院に属し、自己修養を目的とするのに対し、修道士（フライヤー）は外部で活動し、人々のために良い働きをすることを目的としています。[Fowler]
