「 inauguration 」の語源

「古代ローマの官職で、未来の出来事に関する自然の兆しや前兆を観察し、解釈する役割を持っていた者」、1540年代の言葉で、ラテン語の augur に由来します。これは古代ローマの宗教的な役職で、もしかしたら（デ・ヴァーンによると）元々は「儀式によって実現される作物の増加」を意味していたかもしれません。その場合、古代ラテン語の *augos（属格 *augeris）「増加」に由来し、augere「増加させる」（印欧語の語根 *aug- (1)「増加する」から）と関連しています。

もっと一般的な説は、ラテン語の avis「鳥」に由来するというものです。なぜなら、鳥の飛び方や鳴き声、食べ方は重要な占いの対象だったからです（auspex と比較）。この場合、後半の要素は garrire「話す」から来ていると考えられます。関連語としては Augural（占いに関する）、augurial（占い師の）があります。
