「 lens 」の語源

年に一度生えるマメ科の植物で、その食用の種子も指します。13世紀中頃に登場し、古フランス語の lentille（レンズ豆）から来ています。また、12世紀には「そばかす」という意味も持っていました。ラテン語の lenticula（小さなレンズ豆）が語源で、これは lens（レンズ豆）の縮小形です（属格は lentis）。ギリシャ語の lathyros（豆類）と同根で、古高ドイツ語の linsa、現代ドイツ語の linse（レンズ豆）とも関連があります。古教会スラヴ語では lęšta、ロシア語では ljačと呼ばれています。
