「 masturbation 」の語源

「故意の性的自己刺激」、1711年（1620年代にはmastuprationとして早期に記録）、フランス語のmasturbationおよび現代ラテン語のmasturbationem（主格masturbatio）から直接的に派生した行為名詞で、ラテン語のmasturbari「 masturbeする」の過去分詞幹から派生。

このラテン語の単語は、turbare「妨げる、混乱させる」の影響を受けて（おそらく変形した）*manstuprare、manu（手の奪格）から、manus「手」（manualを参照）+ stuprare「自分を冒涜する」、stuprum「冒涜、不名誉」、stupere「愕然とする、無知になる」（stupidを参照）に関連しているという長年の憶測がある。このため英語での単語の最初の形式。しかし、最初の要素は未証明の*mazdo-「ペニス」を表すかもしれない[OED]。このための初期の技術用語はonanismだった。関連語: Masturbational。

Farmer and Henley ["Slang and Its Analogues," 1898]は、「マスターベーション」または「マスターベートする」のスラング用語として、frig（ラテン語のfricare「摩擦する」に由来）to bob; to box the Jesuit; to chuff, to chuffer; to claw; to digitate（女性のため）;to fight one's turkey（テキサスの）;to handle; to indorse; to milk; to mount a corporal and four; to dash one's doodleを挙げ、「時にはCENSUSを抑えることとして知られていた」と記載している。
