「針葉樹、Pinus属の木」、古英語ではpin（複合語で）、古フランス語ではpin、ラテン語のpinus「マツ、マツの木、モミの木」から直接来ており、これはおそらくPIE *pi-nu-、語根*peie-「太る、膨らむ」（fat (adj.)を参照）から来ている。
もしそうであれば、その木の名前は樹液やピッチを指していることになる。サンスクリット語のpituh「ジュース、樹液、樹脂」、pitudaruh「マツの木」、ギリシャ語のpitys「マツの木」と比較。pitch (n.1)も参照。古英語の固有の言葉はfurh（firを参照）。Pine-top「安価な違法ウイスキー」は1858年に証明され、アメリカ南部のスラング。
