「 television 」の語源

1907年、電信や電話線を介して動画像を伝送する理論的システムを指しており、英語で形成されたか、フランス語のtélévisionから借用された。tele- + visionを参照。

Television is not impossible in theory. In practice it would be very costly without being capable of serious application. But we do not want that. On that day when it will be possible to accelerate our methods of telephotography by at least ten times, which does not appear to be impossible in the future, we shall arrive at television with a hundred telegraph wires. 当時の仮想技術である画像を遠距離に送るための名前としては、telephote（1880年）やtelevista（1904年）などの提案があった。成功した技術は1920年代から30年代にかけて開発された。ドイツ語ではFernsehenとして定着した。短縮形TVは1948年から、tee-veeは1949年までに。『テレビジョンセット』の意味は1941年から。『媒体としてのテレビジョン』の意味は1927年から。消費者向けには、televiewer（1935年）やtelevisioner（1928年）などが試みられた。
