「精神活動の行為または産物」、古英語 þoht, geþoht 「思考の過程、思考；思いやり」、þencan 「心に描く、考える」（thinkを参照）から派生。ドイツ語の Gedächtnis 「記憶」、Andacht 「注意、献身」、Bedacht 「考慮、熟慮」の第二要素と同根。
Bammesberger（「English Etymology」）は、ゲルマン語では -kt- が一般的に -ht- に変化し、-ht- 前の鼻音が失われたと説明している。原ゲルマン語 *thankija- は過去形で接尾辞 -t を追加した。この最初のパターンによってゲルマン語の形は *thanht- となり、第二のパターンによって古英語は þoht となった。
OEDはWalt WhitmanとEmily Dickinsonがそれを thot と綴っていると引用している。19世紀の小さなまたは劣ったものは thoughtlet (1846)、thoughtling (1848)、または thoughtkin (1867) かもしれない。
Second thought 「後の考慮」は1640年代から記録されている。Thought-crime は「1984年」（1949年）から；thought police は1945年から証明されており、元々は戦時中の日本の特高警察（Tokubetsu Koto Keisatsu）を指していた。
