「 variety 」の語源

1540年代、「多様であることの事実または性質、多様性、単調さの不在」；1550年代、「異なるものの集合；同種の異なるもの間の不一致」；フランス語の variété およびラテン語の varietatem（主格 varietas）「違い、多様性；種類、品種、種、類」から、varius「様々な」（varyを参照）。

「同種の他のものとは異なるもの、変異体」という意味は1610年代から。芸術的な質としては1590年代から。混合性の音楽ホールや演劇の公演を指して、1868年に記録されている（variety troupe）、アメリカ英語。

variety-show. An entertainment consisting of dances, songs, negro-minstrelsy, gymnastics, or specialties of any kind, sometimes including farces or short sketches written to exhibit the accomplishments of the company. [Century Dictionary, 1891]
