“고대 켈트 음유시인,” 15세기 중반, 스코틀랜드어에서 유래, 고대 켈트어 bardos “시인, 노래하는 사람”에서 유래, 켈트어 *bardo-에서, 아마도 PIE *gwredho- “찬사를 만드는 자”에서, 어근 *gwere- (2) “즐기게 하다”의 접미형.

역사적 시대에는 웨일스인들 사이에서 큰 존경을 받는 용어였으나, 스코틀랜드인들 사이에서는 유목민적인 문제아로 여겨져 경멸의 대상이 되었다. 이후 스콧에 의해 “서정시인, 노래하는 사람”의 더 고대적인 의미로 이상화되었다. 영어에서 이 단어의 시적 사용은 그리스어 bardos, 라틴어 bardus에서 유래하며, 모두 골리아어에서 유래했다.
