15세기 초, "유사한 관계를 가지는, 응답하는, 일치하는"이라는 의미는 19세기부터 corresponding에 의해 채택되었으며, 중세 라틴어 correspondentem, 현재 분사 형태의 correspondere "응답하다, 조화롭다, 상호작용하다"에서 유래되었고, com "함께, 서로" (참조 com-) + respondere "대답하다" (참조 respond)의 동화된 형태에서 유래되었습니다.

"편지로 다른 사람과 소통하는 사람," 1620년대, correspondent (형용사)에서 유래. 신문에서의 의미 "먼 거리에서 편지 형식으로 정기적인 소통을 보내는 사람"은 1711년부터.
