14세기 초, "끝난, 더 이상 존재하지 않는"이라는 의미로 사용되었으며, passed의 변형으로, passen "지나가다"의 과거 분사형입니다 (자세한 내용은 pass (v.)를 참조하세요). "지나간, 이전의 시간에 속하는"이라는 의미는 14세기 중반부터 사용되었고, "과거의 행동이나 상태를 표현하는" 문법적 의미는 1520년대부터 나타났습니다. past participle (과거 분사)라는 용어는 1775년에 기록되었고, past tense (과거 시제)는 1650년대부터 사용되었습니다. 전치사로서 "시간이나 위치에서 넘어선"이라는 의미는 1300년경부터 형용사에서 파생되어 사용되었습니다.
