few 的詞源

古英語 feawe（複數形式縮寫爲 fea）“不多，少量； 很少，甚至一點點”，源自原始日耳曼語 *fawaz（也是古撒克遜語 fa 、古弗裏西亞語 fe 、古高地德語 fao 、古諾爾斯語 far 、丹麥語 faa 的來源），源自 PIE 詞根 *pau-（1）“少，小”。

在古英語中始終爲複數形式，根據 OED“根據副詞 fela 的類比”，意爲“許多”。短語 few and far between 自1660年代開始使用。在 quite a few（1854年）中的不尋常的反諷用法，意爲“許多”，早期爲 a good few（1803年）。
