lick 的詞源

古英語 liccian “舔過表面，舔起來”，源自原始日耳曼語 *likkon（也包括古撒克遜語 likkon，荷蘭語 likken，古高地德語 lecchon，德語 lecken，哥特語 bi-laigon），源自 PIE 詞根 *leigh- “舔”。

據說法語 lécher，意大利語 leccare 是日耳曼語藉詞。比喻性的 lick (one's) lips 表示渴望，始於大約1500年。Lick-ladle（1849）是指（人類）寄生蟲的古老短語。將某人或某物 lick (someone or something) into shape（1610年代）是指熊的假定方式：

"舔的行爲"，約1600年，來自 lick（v.1）。更早的名詞是 licking（14世紀晚期； 古英語有 liccung）。"小部分"的意思是1814年，最初是蘇格蘭的； 因此有了美國的口語意義。"動物舔鹽的地方"的意思來自1747年。"爵士音樂中的短小樂段或獨奏"是在1922年左右出現的，可能來自早期的口語意義"賽跑中的衝刺或快速奔跑"（1809年）。"猛擊"的意思（1670年代）來自 lick（v.2）。

"打敗，超越，克服"，可能來自於1530年的 lick（動詞1）在該年的 Coverdale 聖經中的比喻用法，表示在 Numbers xxii.4中“擊敗，消滅”（敵人的力量）：
