boot-licker 的詞源

"覆蓋腳和小腿的鞋子," 早在14世紀，來自古法語 bote "boot"（12世紀），在普羅旺斯語，西班牙語和中世紀拉丁語中都有相應的詞，其來源不詳，可能來自日耳曼語源。最初僅指騎馬靴。

從大約1600年開始，作爲"固定的馬車外部臺階"。後來擴展到"用於存放行李的低外部隔間"（1781），因此在英國轉義爲指機動車輛的存儲隔間（美式英語使用 trunk（n.1））。

Boot-black "擦鞋人"來自1817年； boot-jack "用於握住靴子後跟，以便將腳從中拔出的工具"來自1793年。Boot Hill，美國邊境俚語，指"墓地"（1893年，在德克薩斯州平原的背景下），可能是指穿着靴子去世的暗示。多塞特郡的一個古老詞語，指"半靴"是 skilty-boots [Halliwell, Wright]。

據說法語 lécher，意大利語 leccare 是日耳曼語藉詞。比喻性的 lick (one's) lips 表示渴望，始於大約1500年。Lick-ladle（1849）是指（人類）寄生蟲的古老短語。將某人或某物 lick (someone or something) into shape（1610年代）是指熊的假定方式：
