mirthful 的詞源

古英語 myrgð “快樂，愉悅，永恆的幸福，救贖”（原始意義現已過時），源自原始日耳曼語 *murgitha（源頭還包括中古荷蘭語 merchte），是 *murgjo- 的質量名詞（參見 merry； 還參見 -th（2））。到13世紀初，“表達或展現幸福，歡樂”的意思已經出現； 到14世紀中期，“愉快，歡樂，歡騰的狀態或感覺”已經出現。  Mirthquake “引起抽搐笑聲的娛樂”首次出現於1928年，指的是哈羅德·勞埃德的電影。

I HAVE always preferred chearfulness to mirth. The latter, I consider as an act, the former as an habit of the mind. Mirth is short and transient, chearfulness fixed and permanent. Those are often raised into the greatest transports of mirth, who are subject to the greatest depressions of melancholy: on the contrary, chearfulness, though it does not give the mind such an exquisite gladness, prevents us from falling into any depths of sorrow. 詞根元素附加在名詞（以及現代英語中的動詞詞幹）上，表示“充滿，具有，以...爲特徵”，還表示“容納的數量或體積”（handful， bellyful）； 源自古英語 -full， -ful，它是 full（形容詞）通過與前面的名詞合併而成爲後綴，但最初是一個獨立的詞。與德語 -voll，古諾爾斯語 -fullr，丹麥語 -fuld 同源。大多數英語 -ful 形容詞在某個時候既有被動（“充滿 x”）又有主動（“引起 x； 充滿 x 的機會”）的意義。

在古英語和中古英語中很少見，更常見的是將 full 附加在詞的開頭（例如古英語 fulbrecan “違反”， fulslean “直接殺死”， fulripod “成熟”； 中古英語有 ful-comen “達到（一種狀態），實現（一種真理）”， ful-lasting “耐久性”， ful-thriven “完整，完美”等）。
