redundant 的詞源

“多余，超过自然或必要的”，约1600年，来自拉丁语 redundantem（主格 redundans），redundare 的现在分词，字面意思是“溢出，倾泻而出；过满”；引申义是“过剩”，来自 re- “再”（参见 re-）+ undare “波浪起伏”，来自 unda “波浪”（来自原始印欧语 *unda-，鼻音化形式的词根 *wed- (1) “水；湿”）。

在17世纪有时也用于更积极的意义，“充盈过剩或丰盈，生机勃勃，丰富”，例如在《失乐园》中，尽管他在这里的意思谁也无法猜测：

With burnished neck of verdant gold, erect

Amidst his circling spires that on the grass

Floated redundant.
