surf 的詞源

"發出呻吟或低語聲"，中古英語 swouen，源自古英語 swogan "發出聲音，咆哮，嚎叫，沙沙作響，吹口哨"，源自原始日耳曼語 *swoganan（也指古撒克遜語 swogan "沙沙作響"，哥特語 gaswogjan "嘆息"），源自 PIE 擬聲根 *(s)wagh-（類似於希臘語 ēk h ō，拉丁語 vagire "哭泣，咆哮，發出聲音"）。"從16世紀開始幾乎只在蘇格蘭和北方方言中使用，直到19世紀被廣泛採用於文學作品" [OED]。相關詞彙： Soughed； soughing。名詞晚於14世紀出現， swough，意爲"急速流動，低語聲，低沉的咆哮聲"，源自動詞。

1955年，動詞名詞化自 surf（動詞）。衝浪熱潮從1963年開始從加利福尼亞州席捲全美。 Surf-board 最早出現於1826年，最初在夏威夷和波利尼西亞的背景下使用。 Surf music 出現於1963年。
