Etimologia e Storia di Hobbit

Nel 1937, il termine è stato coniato nei racconti fantastici di J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973).

La parola appare anche in un elenco molto lungo di creature soprannaturali folkloriche nei scritti di Michael Aislabie Denham (morto nel 1859), come un'osservazione a margine della sua spiegazione secondo cui coloro che nascono la vigilia di Natale non possono vedere gli spiriti. Denham è stato uno dei primi folkloristi, concentrandosi su Northumberland, Durham, Westmoreland, Cumberland, l'Isola di Man e la Scozia. Questo è stato pubblicato nel volume 2 di "The Denham Tracts" [a cura di James Hardy, Londra: Folklore Society, 1895], una raccolta delle pubblicazioni sparse di Denham.

Anzi, ogni singolo edificio, castello o villa che potesse vantare una certa antichità aveva il suo bogle, il suo spettro o il suo knocker. Le chiese, i cimiteri e i crocicchi erano tutti infestati. Ogni viale verde aveva la sua pietra di boulder su cui un'apparizione vegliava di notte. Ogni comune aveva il suo cerchio di fate a lui appartenente. E c'era a malapena un pastore che non avesse visto uno spirito!

[Enfasi aggiunta] È curioso che il nome non compaia altrove nel folklore, e non ci sono prove che Tolkien abbia mai visto questo. La parola è stata registrata anche dal 1835 come "un termine generalmente usato in Galles per esprimere una quantità pari a quattro misure gallesi" [in documenti legali inglesi per Hughes vs. Humphreys, un caso di pesi e misure]. Hobbitry attestato dal 1947.
