1600年頃、「自然な嫌悪感、敵対的な感情から」、ラテン語のantipathia、ギリシャ語のantipatheia、抽象名詞でantipathēs「感情が対立する、反対の感情を持つ；苦しみに対する返礼として」の派生語、また「相互に感じられる」の意も含む、anti「反対に、対抗して」（anti-を参照）+ pathein「苦しむ、感じる」（PIEルート*kwent(h)-「苦しむ」から）から。
