「 anti-perspirant 」の語源

1848年、「脱臭剤」、元々はマンureの匂いを抑える物質を指し、英語でde- + ラテン語odorantem、odor「匂い」（odor (n.)参照）から形成された。人間の体に使う物質を指すようになったのは1860年から。 earlier version、香りのある粉はempasm（1650年代）と呼ばれ、ギリシャ語の*empasma「振りかける」から。

1640年代、揮発性液体について、「孔を通して蒸発する」（自動詞）、perspirationからの逆成形であり、部分的にはラテン語perspirare「常に吹くまたは呼吸する」から、per「通して」（PIE語根*per- (1)「前へ」、したがって「通して」から）+ spirare「呼吸する、吹く」（spirit (n.)を参照）。「汗をかく、皮膚の孔を通して水分を排出する」（自動詞）の意味は、1725年から証明されている丁寧な使用法である。医学者たちは「感覚的（汗）」と「無感覚的な」発汗の区別を維持しようとした：

[I]t is sufficient for common use to observe, that perspiration is that insensible discharge of vapour from the whole surface of the body and the lungs which is constantly going on in a healthy state; that it is always natural and always salutary; that sweat, on the contrary, is an evacuation, which never appears without some uncommon effort, or some disease to the system, that it weakens and relaxes, and is so far from coinciding with perspiration, that it obstructs and checks it. 「against, opposed to, opposite of, instead」を意味するギリシャ起源の語形成要素で、母音や-h-の前ではant-に短縮される。古フランス語のanti-およびラテン語のanti-、ギリシャ語のanti（前置詞）「over, against, opposite; instead, in the place of; as good as; at the price of; for the sake of; compared with; in opposition to; in return; counter-」から直接的に由来し、PIE *anti「against」、また「in front of, before」（語根*ant-「front, forehead」から、前に、以前を意味する派生語と共に）からも由来する。これはイタリア語でanti-となり（したがって、antipasto）、フランス語でも同様である。

これはサンスクリット語のanti「over, against」と古英語のand-（answerの最初の要素）と同根である。ギリシャ語で一般的な複合要素で、一部の組み合わせでは音楽的な理由からanth-となった。中英語のいくつかの単語に現れたが、近代まで英語の語形成では一般的には使用されなかった。いくつかの英単語（anticipate、antique）ではラテン語のanteを表す。

「opposed to, opposite」を意味する名詞の複合語では（Antichrist、anti-communist）、アクセントはanti-に残る。形容詞では古い前置詞的な意味「against, opposed to」を保持する場合、アクセントは他の要素に残る（anti-Christian、anti-slavery）。
