「 atomic 」の語源

「原子に関する」という意味で使われ始めたのは1670年代の哲学用語として（atomisticを参照）。科学的な意味では1811年からで、atomと-icが組み合わさったものです。Atomic number（原子番号）は1821年に確認され、atomic mass（原子量）は1848年から使われています。

Atomic energy（原子力）は1906年に現代的な意味で記録されました（1903年からのintra-atomic energy〈原子内エネルギー〉として）。

March, 1903, was an historic date for chemistry. It is, also, as we shall show, a date to which, in all probability, the men of the future will often refer as the veritable beginning of the larger powers and energies that they will control. Atomic bomb（原子爆弾）は、H.G.ウェルズの著作「解放された世界」（1914年）で初めて記録されました。彼はそれを「無限に爆発し続ける爆弾」と考えていました。
