「 encase 」の語源

「 receptacle, box, that which encloses or contains（容器、箱、閉じ込めるもの）」は14世紀初頭、アングロ・フレンチおよびオールド・ノース・フレンチのcasse（オールド・フレンチのchasse「ケース、聖遺物箱」；モダン・フレンチのchâsse）から、ラテン語のcapsa「箱、保管庫」（特に本用）から、capere「取る、持つ」（PIEルート*kap-「つかむ」）に由来します。

「外部保護カバー」という意味は14世紀後半から。1660年代には「フレーム」という意味でも使用されました（例：staircase、casement）。 artilleryの意味は1660年代からで、case-shot「ケースに入れられた小さな発射体」（1620年代）から来ています。印刷業界での使用（1580年代初記録）は、コンポジターがタイプを簡単にアクセスできるように区画に分けて保存する浅い木製のトレイ2つを指し、1862年に大文字用のupper-case（コンポジターの傾斜した作業台の上部に位置することから名付けられ）、小文字用のlower-caseに繋がりました。

The cases, or receptacles, for the type, which are always in pairs, and termed the 'upper' and the 'lower,' are formed of two oblong wooden frames, divided into compartments or boxes of different dimensions, the upper case containing ninety-eight and the lower fifty-four. Theory of Incasement, an old theory of reproduction which assumed that when the first animal of each species was created, the germs of all other individuals of the same species which were to come from it were incased in its ova. The discovery of spermatozoa developed the theory in two opposite directions: the ovulists, or ovists, held still to the theory of incasement in the female while the animalculists, or spermists, entertained the theory of incasement in the male. この接頭辞は「中に」「入って」という意味を持ち、フランス語や古フランス語の en-、ラテン語の in-（「中に」「入って」を意味し、印欧語根 *en「中に」から派生）に由来しています。一般的には、-p-、-b-、-m-、-l-、-r- の前で同化します。ラテン語の in- はフランス語、スペイン語、ポルトガル語では en- になりましたが、イタリア語では in- のままでした。

また、この接頭辞は英語において、名詞や形容詞から動詞を作る際にも使われ、「入れる」「載せる」という意味（例：encircle「囲む」）や「〜させる」「〜にする」という意味（例：endear「愛させる」）、さらには強調の役割（例：enclose「囲い込む」）を持っています。フランス語のつづりの変化が中英語に影響を与え、ensure（保証する）と insure（保険をかける）のような類似が生まれました。英語の多くの en- で始まる単語は、かつては in- の変形を持っていたり、その逆もあったりしました。
