1670年代、lagune、以前のlaguna（1610年代）、「海のそばにあるが砂丘によって海から隔てられた湿地や浅い汽水域の領域」、フランス語のlaguneまたは直接イタリア語のlaguna「池、湖」から、ラテン語のlacuna「池、穴」から、lacus「池」（lake (n.1)を参照）。元々はヴェネツィアの地域を指していた。1769年に（クック船長によって）南海の環礁に囲まれた湖のような水域に適用された。また、-oonも参照。関連語：Lagoonal。

In regions where Spanish is or formerly was the current language, the word lagoon is likely to be used with more latitude of meaning, since in the Spanish laguna is applied to ordinary lakes, to the bottoms of deep bays, especially when these are more or less closed in by a narrowing of the coast-lines, so as to give rise to lake-like areas, and also to shallow, swampy, or almost dried-up lakes inland as well as near the coast.
