「 maneuver 」の語源

「軍隊や軍艦の計画的な移動」、1757年、フランス語のmanoeuvre「操作、操縦」から、古フランス語のmanovre「手作業」（13世紀）から、中世ラテン語のmanuopera（スペイン語のmaniobra、イタリア語のmanovraの語源）から、manuoperare「手で働く」から、ラテン語のmanu operari、manu、手の与格manus（PIEルート*man- (2)「手」から）＋operari「働く、操作する」（PIEルート*op-「働く、豊富に生産する」から）。

同じ言葉がフランス語から中英語に「手作業」という意味で借用されていた（15世紀後半；manureと比較）。一般的な意味として「巧妙な計画、独創的な企て」、また「人や動物による機敏または器用な動き」は1774年に見られる。関連語：Maneuvers。

1777年に、maneuver（名詞）から、あるいはフランス語のmanœuvrer「働く、手作業をする；実行する、準備する」（12世紀頃）から、さらには中世ラテン語のmanuoperare（手を使って働く）から派生したものです。もともとは軍事的な意味合いで使われていましたが、比喩的な使い方は1801年から見られます。関連語としては、Maneuvered（操縦された）、maneuvering（操縦している）が挙げられます。
