「 notwithstanding 」の語源

「not」は否定を表す言葉で、否定、拒絶、禁止などの意味を持ちます。13世紀中頃に登場し、nohtやnaht（「決して」「全くない」という意味）の弱形として使われていました（詳しくはnaughtを参照）。また、前に述べたことを否定したり、皮肉を表現するための感嘆詞としては、1900年頃から使われ始め、1989年に「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」の「ウェインズ・ワールド」コントで広まりました。

Not, spoken with emphasis, often stands for the negation of a whole sentence referred to: as, I hope not (that is, I hope that the state of things you describe does not exist). [Century Dictionary, 1895]

Notは強調して発音されることが多く、前の文全体を否定する役割を果たします。例えば、「I hope not」（私はその状況が存在しないことを願っています）というように使われます。[Century Dictionary, 1895]

「not know X from Y」（one's ass from one's elbowやshit from Shinolaなど）は、1930年頃から現代英語で使われるようになった表現ですが、中英語では「not know an A from a windmill」（1400年頃）という形で既に存在していました。また、二重否定の構文「not un-」はオーウェルに批判されましたが、英語では古くから使われており、ミルトンやアングロサクソンの詩人たちにも好まれていました。

「妨害、障害、阻止、または障壁； opposing（反対するもの）や道を塞ぐもの」、14世紀中頃、古フランス語の obstacle, ostacle 「対立、障害、妨害」（13世紀）および直接的にラテン語の obstaculum 「妨害、障害」、楽器接尾辞 *-tlom + obstare 「前に立つ、対峙する、塞ぐ、妨げる、 thwart（阻止する）」から、ob 「前に、対して」（ob-を参照）+ stare 「立つ」、PIEルート *sta- 「立つ、固くするまたは固まる」から。
