「 speech 」の語源

中世英語の speche は、古英語の spæc に由来し、「話す行為」「明確な音を発する力」「話し方」「発言」「物語」「形式的な表現」「言語」といった意味を持ちます。これは古英語の spræc の変種で、さらに遡ると原始ゲルマン語の *sprek- や *spek- に由来します（これらはデンマーク語の sprog、古サクソン語の spraca、古フリジア語の spreke、オランダ語の spraak、古高ドイツ語の sprahha、ドイツ語の Sprache「言語」の語源でもあります）。詳細は speak (v.) を参照してください。

なお、spr- の形は1200年までに英語から消えました。1200年頃には書かれた言葉を指すようになり、1580年代には「聴衆に向けた演説」という意味も記録されています。
