「 supernatural 」の語源

13世紀後半、「身体の修復力、身体のプロセス; 成長の力」という意味で、古フランス語のnature「自然、生きること、生命の原理; 特性、エッセンス」から、ラテン語のnatura「物事の進行; 自然の特性、構成、質; 宇宙」、文字通り「誕生」、natus「生まれた」、動詞nasci「生まれる」の過去分詞（印欧祖語のルート*gene-「出産する、繁殖する」から）から。

14世紀中頃には「物質世界の力またはプロセス; 生物を生み出し秩序を維持するもの」として使われ、14世紀後半には「創造、宇宙」としても使われた。また「遺伝、誕生、 hereditary circumstances; 本質的特性、固有の構成、先天的性質」（例：human nature）や「自然の擬人化、母なる自然」とも。Natureとnurtureはシェイクスピアの「テンペスト」以来、対比されてきた。

「自然を超えた、または自然とは異なるもの」という意味で1570年代に使われ始めました。これは中世ラテン語のpreternaturalis（13世紀中頃）から来ており、ラテン語のフレーズpraeter naturam (praeterque fatum)「自然を超えて（運命を超えて）」に由来しています。このフレーズは、praeter「超えて、上に、量や程度でより多く」（preter-を参照）と、natura「自然」（natural (adj.)を参照）の対格から成り立っています。

1770年代以降、supernatural（超自然的）という意味でも使われていますが、技術的にはこの言葉とは異なります。「Preternaturalは、特に自然の働きである可能性があるが、実際にはそうではないものを指すために使われます」と『Century Dictionary』にもあります。関連語には、Preternaturally; preternaturalness; preternaturalism.があります。
