「 trahison des clercs 」の語源

英語で使われるフランス語のフレーズ。「知識人の裏切り」（「聖職者の裏切り」）; 「知識人の自己妥協的な誠実さ、学者、道徳家、ジャーナリストなどがその職業を裏切ることや腐敗すること」を指し、ジュリアン・ベンダによる1927年のフランス語の著作のタイトルで、1928年に英語に翻訳された。

In short, intellectuals began to immerse themselves in the unsettlingly practical and material world of political passions: precisely those passions, Benda observed, "owing to which men rise up against other men, the chief of which are racial passions, class passions and national passions." ... "Our age is indeed the age of the intellectual organization of political hatreds" he wrote. "It will be one of its chief claims to notice in the moral history of humanity."
