dirt 어원

15세기 중세 영어 drit, drytt "배설물, 분뇨, 대변, 불결하거나 더러운 물질, 진흙, 지구" 특히 "느슨한 흙" (약 1300년경)에서 유래, 고대 노르드어 drit에서, 고대 영어 dritan "배설물을 배출하다"와 동족, 원시 게르만어 *dritan (네덜란드어 drijten, 고대 고지 독일어 trizan의 출처).

1300년경부터 사람들에게 경멸적으로 사용됨; 14세기 초부터 무가치한 것의 비유적 표현. "가십"이라는 의미는 1926년 (헤밍웨이)에서 처음 증명됨.

형용사로서 "느슨한 흙으로 구성되거나 만들어진" 의미는 1860년까지. dirt-bike는 1970년까지 증명됨. Dirt-cheap "흙만큼 저렴한"은 1766년, dirt-poor "극빈한"은 1906년까지. Dirt road, 포장되지 않거나 아스팔트가 아닌 도로는 1835년, 미국 영어에서 증명됨. Pay-dirt "금이 포함된 흙"은 1857년, 원래 캘리포니아 광부들의 속어.

It is customary to speak of "the golden sands of California;" but a person who should believe that the gold is found in pure sand, would be far wrong. Usually, the pay-dirt is a very stiff clay, full of large gravel and stones. The depth of this pay-dirt varies.
