skunk 어원

위협받을 때 악취를 방출하는 북미의 일반적인 족제비류 포유류, 1630년대, squunck, 남부 뉴잉글랜드 알곤킨 언어(아마도 매사추세츠어)에서 유래, 프리토 알곤퀴언어 */šeka:kwa/, */šek-/ "소변을 누다" + */-a:kw/ "여우" [Bright]에서 유래.

유럽인들 사이에서는 때때로 그들의 polecat 이름을 따서 불렸으며, 스컹크는 북미 동물 중 가장 빨리 기록되고 설명된 동물 중 하나이다. Sagard-Théodat의 "Histoire du Canada" (1636)에서는 자연학자들에게 "enfans du diable, que les Hurons appelle Scangaresse, ... une beste fort puante," 등으로 소개되었다.
