gauge 的詞源

“通過精確測量確定”，15世紀中葉，來自盎格魯-法語 gauge（14世紀中葉），源自古北法語 gauger “標準化，校準，測量”（古法語 jaugier），來自 gauge “測量桿”，一個起源不明的詞。也許來自法蘭克 *galgo “測量用的杆，柱”或其他日耳曼語源（比較古諾爾斯語 gelgja “杆，棲木”，古高地德語 galgo； 參見 gallows）。相關詞彙： Gauged； gauging。比喻用法始於1580年代。“拼寫變體 gauge 和 gage 自中古英語以來就存在，儘管在美國英語中， gage 僅用於技術用途”[Barnhart]。
