tournament 的詞源

「中世武術比賽，錦標賽」，約公元1200年，tournement，（比喻，精神比賽；約公元1300年，字面意義），來自古法語 tornement「騎士之間為勇氣獎勵而進行的比賽」（12世紀），來自 tornoier「比武，競技，參加錦標賽」（參見 tourney (v.)）。

Tournaments and jousts differed from one another principally in the circumstance that in the first several combatants on each side were engaged at once, and in the second the contention was between two combatants only.
