これはcostumeの二重起源語。古英語ではþeawと呼ばれていた。「特定の場所で商品を購入する習慣」という意味は1590年代から。この「定期的な」関税や税金の意味は14世紀初頭。ここでの母国語はtoll（名詞）。
Custom-house「関税を徴収するための輸出入地点の政府機関」は15世紀後半から。Customs「港、空港などで手荷物が検査される場所」は1921年までに。
