「 discoverable 」の語源

1300年頃、discoveren、「暴露する、明らかにする、開示する、さらけ出す、視界にさらす、（誰かの秘密を）裏切る」という意味で、現在は廃れた感覚。これは古フランス語のdescovrir「覆いを取る、屋根を取り除く、披露する、明らかにする、裏切る」から、また中世ラテン語のdiscooperireから、ラテン語のdis-「逆の」（dis-を参照）+ cooperire「覆い隠す、覆いかぶせる、圧倒する、埋める」（cover (v.)を参照）から来ている。

当初は裏切りや悪意のある暴露の意味で（discovererは元々「情報提供者」を意味していた）。中英語でも「取り除く」（帽子や建物の屋根を）といった文字通りの意味で使用された。「知られていなかったものの最初の知識や視界を得る」という意味、現代の主な意味は1550年代に現れた。

Discover, Invent, agree in signifying to find out; but we discover what already exists, though to us unknown; we invent what did not before exist: as, to discover the applicability of steam to the purposes of locomotion, and to invent the machinery necessary to use steam for these ends. ... Discover, Inventは「見つけること」を意味するが、私たちはdiscoverするのは既に存在するが私たちには未知のものを、inventするのは以前には存在しなかったものを発明することである。例えば、蒸気を locomotion の目的に適用することをdiscoverし、これらの目的のために蒸気を使用するために必要な機械をinventするように。… 一部のものはその性格が混ざっているため、どちらの言葉も適用されることがある。[Century Dictionary]

英語の形容詞の一般的な終止形および語形成要素（通常は他動詞に基づく）で、「可能な；責任がある；許可された；価値がある；必要な；または______されるべき」という意味を持ち、時には「満ちている、引き起こす」という意味を持つ、フランス語の-ableおよびラテン語の-abilisから。

正しくは-bleで、ラテン語の-bilisから（母音は一般的に接尾辞化される動詞の語幹の終わりから来ている）、PIE*-tro-を表し、道具の名詞を形成するために使用される接尾辞であり、英語のrudderとsaddle（名詞）の第2音節と同系である。

英語における生きた要素であり、ラテン語または母語の単語からの新しい形成に使用される（readable, bearable）と同様に、名詞と共に使用される（objectionable, peaceable）。時には能動的な意味を持ち（suitable, capable）、時には中立的な意味を持つ（durable, conformable）。20世紀までには、reliable witness（信頼できる証人）、playable foul ball（プレー可能なファウルボール）、perishable goods（腐りやすい商品）のように、非常に柔軟な意味を持つようになった。17世紀の作家はcadaverable「死すべき」を持っている。

To take a single example in detail, no-one but a competent philologist can tell whether reasonable comes from the verb or the noun reason, nor whether its original sense was that can be reasoned out, or that can reason, or that can be reasoned with, or that has reason, or that listens to reason, or that is consistent with reason; the ordinary man knows only that it can now mean any of these, & justifiably bases on these & similar facts a generous view of the termination's capabilities; credible meaning for him worthy of credence, why should not reliable & dependable mean worthy of reliance & dependence? ラテン語では、-abilisと-ibilisは動詞の屈折母音に依存していた。それゆえ、古フランス語、スペイン語、英語における変異形-ibleがある。英語では、-ableは母語（および他の非ラテン語）の単語と共に使用される傾向があり、-ibleは明らかにラテン語起源の単語と共に使用される（ただし例外もある）。ラテン語の接尾辞はableとは語源的に関連していないが、長い間それと一般的に関連付けられており、これがおそらく生きた接尾辞としての活力に寄与している。
