「 discover 」の語源

1300年頃、discoveren、「暴露する、明らかにする、開示する、さらけ出す、視界にさらす、（誰かの秘密を）裏切る」という意味で、現在は廃れた感覚。これは古フランス語のdescovrir「覆いを取る、屋根を取り除く、披露する、明らかにする、裏切る」から、また中世ラテン語のdiscooperireから、ラテン語のdis-「逆の」（dis-を参照）+ cooperire「覆い隠す、覆いかぶせる、圧倒する、埋める」（cover (v.)を参照）から来ている。

当初は裏切りや悪意のある暴露の意味で（discovererは元々「情報提供者」を意味していた）。中英語でも「取り除く」（帽子や建物の屋根を）といった文字通りの意味で使用された。「知られていなかったものの最初の知識や視界を得る」という意味、現代の主な意味は1550年代に現れた。

Discover, Invent, agree in signifying to find out; but we discover what already exists, though to us unknown; we invent what did not before exist: as, to discover the applicability of steam to the purposes of locomotion, and to invent the machinery necessary to use steam for these ends. ... Some things are of so mixed a character that either word may be applied to them. [Century Dictionary]

Discover, Inventは「見つけること」を意味するが、私たちはdiscoverするのは既に存在するが私たちには未知のものを、inventするのは以前には存在しなかったものを発明することである。例えば、蒸気を locomotion の目的に適用することをdiscoverし、これらの目的のために蒸気を使用するために必要な機械をinventするように。… 一部のものはその性格が混ざっているため、どちらの言葉も適用されることがある。[Century Dictionary]
