「 police 」の語源

1530年代、「コミュニティの規制と管理」（policy (n.1) と同様の意味）; 中世フランス語の police「組織された政府、民間行政」（15世紀後半）から、ラテン語の politia「民間行政」から、ギリシャ語の polis「都市」（polisを参照）。

19世紀半ばまでイギリスでは「民間行政」を意味して使用されていた。「公共の秩序の管理、コミュニティにおける法執行の行政」（1716年）はフランス語から（17世紀後半）、元々は英語でフランスや他の外国を指していた。

「秩序を維持し、犯罪を防止し、発見するための組織された民間の力」という意味は1800年までに登場した。イギリスでこのように名付けられた最初の力は、1798年にロンドン港で商品を保護するために設立された海上警察だった。「法律を施行し、犯罪を発見する任務を entrusted された officer の集団」という意味は1810年から。

In its most common acceptation, the police signifies the administration of the municipal laws and regulations of a city or incorporated town or borough by a corps of administrative or executive officers, with the necessary magistrates for the immediate use of force in compelling obedience and punishing violation of the laws, as distinguished from judicial remedies by action, etc. The primary object of the police system is the prevention of crime and the pursuit of offenders; but it is also subservient to other purposes, such as the suppression of mendicancy, the preservation of order, the removal of obstructions and nuisances, and the enforcing of those local and general laws which relate to the public health, order, safety, and comfort. 憲法法において、police power は、政府が市民の自由を制限し、私的権利に対して抑制と強制を行使する権限、特に公共の福祉を促進または保護するためのものである。Police state「国家警察によって規制される国家」は1865年にオーストリアを指して初めて記録された。国際的な意味での Police action「戦争に至らない軍事介入、法律無視を是正するためのもの」は1933年から。Police officer は1794年、アメリカ英語で証明されている。Police station は1817年から。Police dog は1908年から。

1580年代、「監視する、警護する、秩序を保つ、統治する」という意味で、フランス語のpolicerから、police（police (n.)を参照）から来ている。元の意味は廃止された。「警察によって制御または秩序を保つ」という意味は1837年から; 比喩的な使用は1885年から。関連語: Policed; policing。
